On-board cloud detection using Nano-satellites

On-board cloud detection has the ability to significantly impact the design of future Earth observation Nano-satellites. Cloud detection can be useful to rapidly suppress non-informative pixels, and thus increase the compression factor of the data to be downlinked. State-of-the-art of clouds detection algorithms can be found in the literature and few satellites have already use them in space.

In this project students will conduct a trade-of analysis of the state-of-the-art clouds detection algorithms. The students will optimize the selected algorithm so it can be used on the low performance on-board computer. The student will demonstrate the optimized algorithm performance using satellite imagery database. Programing is done in C on a real-time environment. This code will be part of the Technion future satellite mission.
